To increase textile exports, the Uttar Pradesh government intends to treble its output of silk
The Uttar Pradesh government has set an ambitious goal to double its silk production to over 700 tonnes in the near future, aiming to enhance the state’s textile manufacturing and export capabilities.
Silk Clusters and Research Institutes: The state plans to establish dedicated silk clusters and research institutions to promote silk production, thereby boosting rural incomes, especially among young sericulturists.
District-Specific Silk Production: A recent study has led to the allocation of silk production districts for mulberry, eri, and tussar varieties based on their future potential. Mulberry silk is produced across 44 districts, with nearly 90% of the state’s silk output originating from just 30 districts.
Subsidies for Silk Producers: The government offers a 75% subsidy to general category silk producers and a 90% subsidy to those from SC/ST categories to encourage silk cultivation.
Textile Parks Development: Plans are underway to establish 11 private textile parks across the state, with the first set to launch in Shamli district. These parks aim to boost local production, reduce dependency on other states and China for raw materials, and strengthen the textile sector within Uttar Pradesh.
These initiatives are part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader strategy to position itself as a leader in the silk and garment industry, leveraging traditional crafts and modern infrastructure to enhance its global competitiveness
