Soon, the Tamil Nadu government will unveil a new textile policy

The Tamil Nadu government is set to unveil a new textile policy aimed at addressing current challenges and fostering growth in the state’s textile and garment industry. A senior official from the Department of Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles, and Khadi indicated that the policy would be released following the final round of deliberations. The forthcoming policy is expected to enhance the 2019 textile policy, making it more relevant to the industry’s current demands. The official emphasized that the policy would specifically address the issues faced by the industry.

Industry leaders have expressed the need for the policy to focus on modernizing existing facilities, as Tamil Nadu possesses excess capacity throughout the textile value chain. There is a call for support to upgrade traditional powerlooms, either by retrofitting old ones or investing in new ones. Additionally, the policy is expected to address challenges related to Common Effluent Treatment Plants, particularly issues concerning the disposal of sludge produced during effluent treatment.

The Department of Textiles has also announced the establishment of 10 mini textile parks in various districts, including Karur, Erode, and Virudhunagar, at a cost of ₹20 crore. These parks aim to improve the quality of textile products through the adoption of modern technologies.

Furthermore, the government has sanctioned seven textile parks under the Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks, with four already completed and operational. The remaining three are under development in Chengappalli (Tiruppur), Cuddalore, and Erode.
