Castor plants will reportedly be used by the Textile Ministry to grow silk
The Ministry of Textiles is exploring innovative approaches to enhance silk production by utilizing castor plants, aiming to boost domestic silk output and create employment opportunities.
Pilot Project in Bihar: The ministry plans to launch a pilot project in Bhagalpur, Bihar, focusing on cultivating eri silk using castor leaves as feed for silkworms. Eri silk, derived from castor plants, is known for its softness, warmth, and durability, making it suitable for winter wear.
Eri Sericulture Promotional Project in Gujarat: In August 2024, the Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, inaugurated the Eri Sericulture Promotional Project in Gujarat. This initiative aims to encourage castor-growing farmers to adopt sericulture as an additional income-generating activity, thereby expanding eri silk production in the state.
Diversification of Silk Production: Integrating eri silk into India’s silk industry could reduce dependence on traditional mulberry silk, offering a sustainable alternative and enhancing silk production capacity.
Economic Advantages for Farmers: Utilizing castor plants for silk production provides farmers with additional income streams, as castor seeds are also used in medicine and lubricants, and their stems can be utilized for making thatched roofs.
